About Medical Bill Map
Medical Bill Map is a free, plain-English guide for people in the United States who have a medical bill or medical debt. It explains whether your state requires hospitals to give free or discounted care (charity care) and up to what income, whether medical debt can be reported to credit bureaus, how long a bill can be collected or sued on, limits on liens, wage garnishment and interest, payment plans, surprise bills and ground ambulance bills, itemized bills, and where to complain. Free tools work out your income as a percent of the federal poverty level, show the dates that matter for an old bill, and write letters in your browser.
We are not a law firm, not a hospital, not an insurer and not a government agency. We do not represent anyone, we do not negotiate bills and we never contact hospitals or collectors for you. We never tell anyone that they qualify: the hospital or a court decides. We link to official sources: state law, federal rules, state agencies and legal aid.
